Dimon Sounds Alarm on Hidden Leverage in Financial Markets
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon sounded the alarm about hidden leverage in financial markets, warning that high borrowing levels could amplify market disruptions. He noted that margin debt is at an all-time high and there's significant leverage not reflected in official figures because it's hidden under other forms of borrowing.
Dimon said this 'hidden' leverage across prime brokerages, hedge funds, ETFs, and Treasury arbitrage strategies increases the risk of a single investor or fund triggering rapid market volatility. However, he emphasized that current economic conditions differ from the 2008 financial crisis, stating that leverage by itself doesn't create systemic risk.
Dimon pointed out that persistent demand for capital, driven by government deficits, infrastructure spending, and global military buildup, could fuel inflation and keep long-term interest rates elevated. He also mentioned that when volatility rises, clearing houses and banks ask for more collateral, which may lead to a slight increase in market sensitivity.
