Dimon's Small Teams Strategy: A Navy SEAL Approach to Business Success

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says that to win big in business, companies need to think small. In his annual shareholder letter this year, he claims that the real competitive battles are fought on a more granular scale.

Dimon believes that assigning tasks to small teams of capable employees is key to success. He compares these teams to Navy SEALs or the Army's Delta Force - small but effective units with the decision-making power to act quickly.

This approach has science backing it up. A study by Max Ringelmann in 1906 showed that individuals pull a rope with more force alone than they do in a group, due to what he called 'social loafing'. This phenomenon was later studied further by Bibb Latané and others, who found that individual effort drops sharply as the group size grows.

Business leaders have tried to tackle social loafing for years. Amazon's Jeff Bezos introduced the 'two pizzas' rule in the early days of his company, where any team that can't be fed by two pizzas is too big. Mark Zuckerberg has also reduced Facebook's workforce and flattened its management structure to increase efficiency.

Even with advancements in AI, companies are reducing their workforces while expecting the same results or better. Block laid off 40% of its workforce this year due to the progress of AI tools. However, startups building AI-enabled products employ 15% fewer entry-level workers than traditional startups.

For Dimon, winning in business demands 'speed, agility, and relentless execution', which can be achieved through creating small teams that are fully dedicated to a task.
