Disney is significantly expanding its engagement with digital creators, moving beyond traditional marketing partnerships to integrate them into its broader creative operations. Asad Ayaz, Disney’s chief marketing and brand officer, revealed in an exclusive interview that the company is now actively involving creators in development, programming, and other creative aspects. This shift comes after Disney’s earlier, costly experiment with Maker Studios, which cost the company $675 million. Ayaz highlighted that events like Created in LA have accelerated Disney’s plans, providing a platform for creators to showcase their work and collaborate more closely with the entertainment giant.

The strategy includes partnerships with high-profile creators like Dhar Mann and CoComelon, as well as collaborations with platforms like TikTok. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro compared the work of these creators to the innovative spirit of Walt Disney himself, emphasizing the importance of embracing new storytellers. The company’s recent initiatives, such as the premiere of films by top YouTube creators at the El Capitan Theatre, underscore its commitment to this new direction.

Meanwhile, BuzzFeed has also ramped up its efforts to attract creators, rebranding its BuzzFeed Creative Network and appointing Anthony Allred II to lead the initiative. Allred, a former BuzzFeed alum, will focus on signing creators across various verticals, including lifestyle, music, and gaming. The network has already added creators like Love Island stars Ace Greene and Bryan Arenales, fitness creator John Gaines, and car collector Aamir Dassat. This move comes after BuzzFeed’s acquisition by Byron Allen for $120 million and subsequent layoffs, indicating a renewed focus on digital talent.

Both Disney and BuzzFeed are recognizing the growing influence of digital creators, who are reshaping the cultural landscape. As Ayaz noted, the goal is to transition creators from being mere marketing partners to integral parts of the creative process, reflecting a broader industry trend towards valuing digital-native talent.
