Disney Offers Executives Early Retirement Packages Amid Ongoing Layoffs

Walt Disney Co. is offering early retirement buyout packages to certain executives as part of its ongoing cost-cutting measures. The 'Voluntary Early Retirement Opportunity' program, announced on August 24, provides a sweetened retirement package with pay and benefits that recognize service and contributions. This move comes after the company laid off 1,000 roles in April and hundreds more in July.

The reduction in staff is part of Disney's efforts to reduce costs across the enterprise. In its third fiscal quarter, which ended on June 27, the company reported a net income of $2.64 billion, down 49.8% from the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter was $25.25 billion, a 7% increase over the previous year.

Disney Chief Executive Officer Josh D'Amaro and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston have stated that more layoffs may be coming as part of the company's cost-cutting efforts. The 'time-limited' early retirement offer expires when organizational needs are addressed through the standard reduction-in-force process, although no specific date was given.
