Disney Plus Overhaul: Verts, AI Search, and a Possible Free Tier

Disney is transforming its streaming service, Disney Plus, into more than just a platform for watching movies and TV shows. As part of this overhaul, the company has announced six significant changes to be rolled out over the coming months.

The first change is the introduction of vertical videos, or 'Verts,' which will allow users to create and share short-form video content within the app. This feature is being developed in partnership with TikTok creators who can opt-in to use Disney-provided assets from popular franchises.

Disney Plus will also be incorporating AI search capabilities, allowing users to find content using descriptive language rather than keywords. This is currently being tested in beta mode and is expected to roll out more widely in the future.

The company is also considering introducing a free version of Disney Plus, which would join its existing ad-supported tier at $11.99 per month. A free tier could potentially provide a new revenue stream for the company by promoting other aspects of its business, such as theme parks and merchandise.

In addition to these changes, Disney is planning to add more perks for subscribers, including discounts on Disney World hotels and other exclusive offers.
