Disney Releases The Mandalorian and Grogu Early as Box Office Flop
The Mandalorian and Grogu, the latest live-action Star Wars film, has underperformed at the box office. Despite being one of the most successful Star Wars characters in Disney Plus history, the movie failed to replicate that success on the big screen.
According to reports, The Mandalorian and Grogu earned $345 million against a budget of $165 million, falling short of its break-even point of $500-$600 million. This makes it the lowest-grossing Star Wars film of all time, even surpassing the disastrous Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Lucasfilm and Disney have taken steps to mitigate their losses by releasing The Mandalorian and Grogu on digital platforms earlier than expected. The movie is now available for purchase on various streaming services, including Apple TV, Prime Video Store, and Fandango at Home, just 61 days after its theatrical debut.
This move suggests that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to recoup their losses through digital sales, rather than extending the film's theatrical run. The Mandalorian and Grogu's underperformance can be attributed to the crowded summer market and franchise familiarity, as Star Wars has become a staple of the small screen since the launch of Disney Plus.
