Disney Revives Oswald the Lucky Rabbit with SPA Studios Partnership
The SPA Studios has made its long-awaited return to the animation scene, this time in partnership with Disney. The studio's last major success was the 2D animated feature 'Klaus' on Netflix in 2019, which won numerous awards including seven Annie Awards and a BAFTA, as well as earning an Academy Award nomination.
However, after that, the studio faced a series of setbacks, including Netflix's cancellation of the animated feature film 'Ember', although it continued to develop the project. Now, Disney has unveiled several images from its upcoming Oswald miniseries during the D23 conference, with production entrusted to The SPA Studios.
The new series will blend 2D animation with live action and features the rabbit inside the Walt Disney Archives. Cast members Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryder Allen, and Mykal-Michelle Harris have already been confirmed for the project. Oswald, also known as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, is a character created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures.
The return of Oswald marks an interesting strategy from Disney, given that the cartoons produced before 1931 are now in the public domain. This shows that partially losing control over a character's rights does not prevent a company from continuing to bring that character to life. The Oswald miniseries is set to release on Disney+ in February 2027.
