Disney Revolutionizes Cast Member Costumes for Comfort and Storytelling
At Walt Disney World, a massive effort is underway to design and produce costumes for the park's over 65,000 cast members. The costuming team, which operates the largest working wardrobe in the world, has made significant changes to ensure comfort and functionality for cast members while delivering an elevated story for guests.
The process begins with feedback from cast members, who are actively solicited during redesigns. The development team conducts roundtable discussions and role shadows to better understand how costumes are used in a day-to-day setting. This feedback is then used to inform the creative design process, which partners with Walt Disney Imagineering and various lines of business to ensure cast comfort, functionality, and storytelling.
One key change has been adding back vents to make costumes more breathable for cast members working outdoors. Other improvements include designing costumes with adjustable cuffs, pant legs, and waistbands, as well as introducing breathable four-way-stretch fabrics and sun protection. These changes aim to accommodate a wider range of body types and provide greater comfort for cast members.
For example, the new Magic Kingdom main entrance cast member costume features sparkling pixie dust embossed into the shirt pattern and original turret blue colors from 'Cinderella Castle'. The design maintains period styling while minimizing layers and accessories to keep heat in or add weight. Even the necktie is attached to the costume.
These changes demonstrate Disney's commitment to balancing cast member needs with storytelling and guest experience. By putting comfort and functionality first, the company aims to create a more enjoyable and polished atmosphere for both cast members and guests.
