Disney Sues FCC Over Alleged Retaliation for Content
The Walt Disney Company and ABC have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over what they claim is retaliation for their content. The suit, which was filed in Washington D.C. federal court on Tuesday, argues that the FCC's demand for early license renewal is an 'existential threat' to the company.
The eight ABC stations affected by the FCC's order are located in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The licenses of these stations typically renew every eight years, but the FCC has ordered them to file for early renewal 30 months ahead of schedule.
In a statement, Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro said that the company is fighting for its rights and will not be told how to run its business. He cited President Donald Trump's social media post from December 2025, in which he threatened to revoke the broadcast licenses of networks that are '100% negative' to him.
The FCC has stated that the orders are not about retaliation, but rather about ensuring that broadcasters comply with their obligations to the public. However, Disney and ABC argue that this is a veiled attempt to silence them for reporting on topics that the administration disapproves of.
