Disney Sues FCC Over Targeted ABC License Renewal Process
The Walt Disney Company has filed a lawsuit against the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, seeking to block an early license renewal process for eight ABC television stations.
The move comes after the FCC ordered the stations to submit broadcast license renewal applications years ahead of schedule. The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of targeting ABC due to its programming and asks a federal court to intervene.
Disney described the FCC's action as an 'existential threat' and is seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the regulator from taking action related to the early applications.
FCC chairman Brendan Carr has previously rejected claims of retaliation, arguing that broadcasters using public airwaves must meet public-interest obligations. Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro stated that the company will defend its editorial principles and 'stand up to what we believe is journalistic integrity.'
