Disney World Announces Largest Expansion in Its History
Disney World is planning its largest expansion in history, following its 55th anniversary on October 1, 2026. Since its opening in 1971, the resort has grown from one theme park and two hotels into a sprawling destination with four theme parks, numerous hotels, and a variety of entertainment options. The anniversary highlighted over 70 new or refreshed experiences added since the 50th anniversary in 2021, including attractions like TRON Lightcycle Run and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT.
The expansion plans include several major projects set for 2027, such as Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios, a new waterfront resort called Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge, and Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom. Magic Kingdom will also see a significant expansion with new areas featuring Disney and Pixar’s Cars and Villains Land. The company has emphasized that there is "more development in the works today than at any other moment in our history."
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro marked the anniversary by sharing archival images and praising the Cast Members for bringing Walt Disney’s vision to life. The anniversary also highlighted recent additions like Figment’s character meet-and-greet and the Starlight: Dream the Night Away Parade. With these ongoing projects, future visits to Disney World promise new attractions, entertainment, and accommodations.
