Disney World Celebrates 55 Years with Anniversary Ceremony
The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida marked its 55th anniversary on October 1, 2026, with a morning ceremony at Cinderella Castle and a message sent to guests' phones via the My Disney Experience app. The resort opened in 1971 after Walt Disney's brother, Roy O. Disney, saw through his vision for the property, which had been quietly acquired by Walt in 1965.
The anniversary celebration began with an address from Joe Schott, President of Walt Disney World, at 8:50 a.m. on Cinderella Castle stage. The ceremony was followed by a push notification to guests' phones with a message from Schott congratulating the resort on its milestone and thanking guests for their loyalty.
After the morning crowd cleared, Magic Kingdom reportedly turned into a ghost town as guests moved on to other parks or took advantage of Early Theme Park Entry. The 55th anniversary collection featured two opening-day cast members as its models, a nod to Disney's long-held description of cast members as the heart of the guest experience.
