Disney World Parks Hit Rare Capacity Restrictions Amid Sudden Attendance Surge

Walt Disney World guests were turned away over the weekend as park capacity restrictions were implemented for the first time in weeks. The unexpected surge in attendance was caused by a combination of factors, including good weather and the ongoing EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival.

Annual Passholder reservations reached capacity at both EPCOT and Magic Kingdom on Saturday, September 26. This was a rare occurrence, as passholder reservations have not routinely disappeared recently. The capacity restrictions were likely due to the appeal of better weather after months of Florida heat, drawing local passholders to visit.

The crowds had a significant impact on wait times, with popular attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind reaching 160 minutes and Frozen Ever After reaching 115 minutes. Magic Kingdom was also affected, with TRON Lightcycle / Run reaching 85 minutes and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train hitting 65 minutes.

The incident highlighted a bigger issue: whether every park currently has enough attractions to keep all guests moving. EPCOT's limited major rides made it difficult for crowds to disperse, and the same challenge is faced by Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Disney is developing new attractions across the resort, but these projects will take years to come to fruition.
