Disneyland's Tomorrowland Reboot Takes a Step Back into the Future
Disneyland is reimagining its Tomorrowland area, aiming to stay true to Walt Disney's original vision of a futuristic and optimistic land. The new Tomorrowland 4.0 will feature attention to detail, immersive storytelling, and emotional experiences, according to Imagineering Executive Creative Producer Emo O'Brien.
The project has already begun, with Imagineers looking back at Walt's opening day speech for inspiration. They plan to lean heavily into Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel intellectual properties, as well as utilize existing rides at other Disney parks for inspiration.
Disneyland faces a state-mandated deadline to retire gas-powered cars on the Autopia attraction by February 1, 2027, or shut down the ride. The first phase of Tomorrowland 4.0 is expected to debut in late 2027 or early 2028 with an electrified Autopia.
Imagineers are also considering a Fantastic Four overlay for Tomorrowland, which would tie the land to a major Marvel intellectual property and offer a nod to Walt's mid-century modern vision of Tomorrowland. However, getting non-Marvel attractions to fit into the new backstory of the land could be a challenge.
