Disney's Magic Kingdom Marks 55 Years Since Grand Opening
The Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida, marked its 55th anniversary on October 1, 2026. The theme park opened in 1971 with just one theme park, Magic Kingdom, and a ticket price of $3.50. Julie Andrews helped celebrate the opening by hosting a television special on NBC.
The grand-opening celebration took place from October 23 to 25, 1971, featuring a massive parade down Main Street, U.S.A., with beloved Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Dumbo, and Goofy. Cinderella Castle was the centerpiece of the festivities, which included hundreds of balloons filling the sky.
The Walt Disney World Monorail System debuted alongside Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971, providing guests with a futuristic mode of transportation. The sleek trains even traveled directly through the center of Disney's Contemporary Resort.
