Disney's Secret Railway Lives On in Griffith Park

Walt Disney's backyard railway, known as the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, was a 2,615-foot long miniature railway built in his Holmby Hills property in 1950.

The railway featured a 46-foot trestle and a 90-foot tunnel that ran beneath Lillian Disney's flower bed.

Disney used the railway as a place to work on his trains and think through ideas away from his professional life, which was an early example of what would later become known as Imagineering.

The barn where Disney worked on the railway was eventually demolished in 1990 due to structural concerns and asbestos, but it was saved by Diane Disney Miller, who recognized its historical significance.
