Dow Slumps Amid High Yields, Oil Prices and Jobs Data Confusion
The US stock market is experiencing mixed performance as investors weigh signs of weakening inflation against increased Treasury yields, oil prices, and new jobs numbers. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 200.09 points, or 0.39%, to stand at 50,705.96, while the Nasdaq was trading slightly higher by 12.04 points, or 0.04% to reach 26,873.10. The S&P 500 index was trading lower by 14.31 points or 0.19%, to 7,637.23.
The high cost of borrowings and Treasury yields are contributing to the Dow's underperformance, with some major stocks including Home Depot, Sherwin-Williams, Disney, and Goldman Sachs falling significantly. On the other hand, AI-related stocks such as Nvidia are performing well, with its stock price rising by 1.15% to $231.01.
The Federal Reserve's October policy meeting is a key concern for market participants, who are recalibrating their expectations based on recent inflation data and jobs numbers. The number of initial unemployment claims in the US fell to 197,000, lower than expected by economists.
