Dow Surges on Disappointing Jobs Report, Treasury Yields Fall
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by nearly 406 points, or 0.8%, in morning trading following a disappointing September employment report. The U.S. economy added just 29,000 jobs, far below the estimated 90,000 economists expected.
Caterpillar shares led the charge with a 3.7% gain, while Nvidia rose by about 2.8%. Together, these two stocks contributed around 219 points to the Dow's advance.
The softer labor data pushed Treasury yields down, easing pressure on growth stocks like Nvidia. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped toward 5.17%, and the two-year yield fell toward 4.72%.
Nvidia, in particular, benefited from the decline in Treasury yields. Higher yields can reduce the present value of future earnings and make bonds more competitive with expensive technology stocks.
