Durham University and Microsoft Launch AI Skills Center
Durham University and Microsoft have launched a new AI Skills Centre of Excellence to boost AI education and workforce preparedness. The partnership aims to equip students, graduates, and staff with essential AI skills through training and support. In its initial phase, the Centre will focus on helping students and graduates navigate a rapidly changing job market, while also assisting staff in integrating AI into teaching, research, and professional services.
Future phases will expand the Centre's reach to include businesses, public sector agencies, and community partners. These groups will have access to workshops, training events, and other sessions centered on AI and related technologies. The goal is to foster AI capability, growth, and opportunities across the region.
The Centre emphasizes inclusive, practical, and responsible use of AI for individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. Professor Karen O'Brien, Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, highlighted how the partnership aligns with the university's mission to prepare students for the evolving workplace. Darren Hardman, Corporate Vice President and CEO of Microsoft UK and Ireland, noted that the initiative supports creating new opportunities for young people nationwide.
