Dwayne Johnson is producing a live-action Medusa movie for Disney through his production company, Seven Bucks Productions. While Johnson is involved as a producer, he is not currently attached to star in the film. The project was revealed on Friday, November 6, and is being developed under an existing agreement between Seven Bucks and Disney.
The story centers on the snake-haired figure from Greek mythology, known for her ability to turn people to stone with her gaze. This is an original live-action project, not a remake of any Disney animated film. Details about the screenplay's approach remain undisclosed, and no director, cast, or release date has been announced.
Johnson will produce the film alongside his longtime partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing the project for Seven Bucks. Matt Smith is also producing through Electro Corduroy Entertainment. Smith previously executive-produced the Maleficent franchise starring Angelina Jolie.
The screenplay is being written by Michael Montemayor, who has worked on other Disney projects such as the upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled and the original screenplay for Stepsisters, a Cinderella spinoff. Medusa has appeared in previous films like Clash of the Titans and the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
