Microsoft Edge is transitioning to Manifest Version 3 (MV3), the Chromium browser extension platform, following in the footsteps of Google Chrome. This move aims to bring security and performance improvements over MV2, which has been widely criticized for its limitations on ad and tracker blockers.

According to Microsoft, 95% of top MV2 extensions have already made the switch to MV3, with many users experiencing no loss of functionality. However, some developers, including those behind uBlock Origin, have spoken out about the need to compromise their extension's capabilities due to the transition.

The Edge team plans to disable MV2 in the Canary channel first, followed by Dev and Beta channels, before gradually rolling it out to Stable users. This process is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 for consumers and early 2027 for enterprises.
