Emirates Dives into $5 Billion Retrofit as Premium Travel Soars
Emirates is undertaking the largest retrofit program in aviation history, investing $5 billion to upgrade its fleet of Boeing 777s. The airline aims to bring 219 aging jets up to modern standards, giving them fresh interiors and positioning them for years of continued service.
The reason behind this massive investment lies in the surging demand for premium travel. According to IATA, business and first-class passengers rose 4.5% globally in 2025, with the Middle East seeing a significant increase in premium-class passengers. Emirates, which filled the second-most premium-class seats worldwide after US airlines, has responded by refocusing on its existing fleet.
The upgrades will primarily feature new layouts with premium economy sections, replacing traditional two- or three-class configurations. The airline's Airbus A380s are also receiving attention under this $5 billion investment, with 110 aircraft set to have their interiors entirely replaced once the project is completed.
