Emirates Rejects Early Boeing 777X Aircraft

Emirates Airline President Tim Clark revealed that the carrier informed Boeing three years ago it would reject the earliest production 777X aircraft. Clark emphasized that the decision was documented long before it became public knowledge. Speaking at Routes World 2026 in Frankfurt, he expressed surprise that the rejection of these early aircraft garnered significant attention in July 2026, calling it old news. The issue affects approximately 20 early 777-9s built for Emirates, which the airline insists must be newly manufactured rather than modified.

Clark stated that Emirates wanted aircraft built under Boeing's newer production and quality-control processes, rather than those assembled before later program changes. He indicated that the responsibility for the rejected aircraft lies with Boeing, suggesting the manufacturer could revamp or offer them at a discounted price. The situation mirrors Boeing's past challenges with early 787s, known as the “Terrible Teens,” which required extensive modifications and were sold at discounts to alternative operators.

Emirates is not the only airline rejecting early 777Xs. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr confirmed in August that the German airline also plans to decline some of the earliest airframes in favor of newer production examples. Despite the rejection and ongoing delays, Clark assured that the decision would not affect Emirates' network plans. The airline expects its first 777-9s in 2027, seven years later than originally planned.

Clark highlighted the broader industry challenge of manufacturers struggling to meet demand. He suggested that building more factories could help address the shortage. Emirates' long-term fleet strategy relies heavily on the 777X to replace its existing widebody fleet, including the Airbus A380s, which are set to retire in the early 2040s. Clark has been pushing Boeing to study a stretched 777-10 variant to better match the capacity of the A380.
