A California state judge has indicated that she will allow a lawsuit against Google to proceed, following a tentative ruling in a case involving a former National Public Radio host. David Greene, the ex-NPR personality, alleges that Google used his voice without permission in an artificial intelligence tool. Judge Shella Dean made her decision after a contested hearing in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Wednesday.

All four of Greene’s claims were overruled in the court’s tentative ruling on Google’s demurrer. However, Judge Dean noted that every cause of action states a claim based on the appropriation of Greene’s voice and identity, suggesting that the lawsuit will move forward despite the initial setbacks.

The judge stated that a demurrer cannot be directed against Greene’s claims, signaling that the legal battle is far from over. The matter has been taken under submission, meaning further deliberation is required before a final decision is reached.
