EU Proposes Social Media Ban for Minors Under 13
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a social media ban for children under 13 and restricted access for those between 13 and 15. The move aims to protect minors from the dangers of online services, which have been linked to concerns about their safety and health.
The proposal includes obligations on social media platforms such as Google's YouTube and Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram. These companies will be required to implement age verification systems to prevent children under 18 from accessing their services.
Von der Leyen warned that online services pose a threat to children's well-being, citing the growing concerns worldwide about the effects of social media on minors.
