EU Targets AWS and Azure with Digital Markets Act Designation
European Union regulators are preparing to release the results of an investigation into Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, two major cloud businesses. According to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the situation, both companies are expected to be placed under the regulatory authority of the EU's Digital Markets Act.
The investigation aims to determine if AWS and Azure meet the criteria to fall under the DMA. Sources indicated that the cloud businesses indeed do qualify, and the final decision is set for issuance as soon as November, according to the report.
Both companies have been targeted by the EU in an attempt to level the playing field in digital markets. Apple, Google, and Meta have all received significant fines from the European Commission, with Google's fine earlier this year being the most substantial at about $1B.
