Eyvind Earle was an illustrator who left an indelible mark on Disney's animated films. Born in New York on April 26, 1916, Earle had a tumultuous childhood, with his father being a film director and a violent man. His mother taught piano, but the family eventually split up. Despite this challenging start, Earle went on to become an accomplished artist, exhibiting his work at the Charles Morgan Galleries in 1937 and having one of his pieces purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art two years later.

Earle's style was initially highly realistic but evolved over time. In addition to personal projects, he made a living designing Christmas cards until he landed a job as an assistant background painter at Walt Disney Productions in 1951. His first project with Disney was Peter Pan, followed by Lady and the Tramp.

The crowning achievement of Earle's career came with Sleeping Beauty, where he perfected his signature style that blended two-dimensionality with bold flat color fields and reduced elements to their essential forms. This style, characterized by stylized silhouettes, impossible shades of deep blue and gold skies, and a focus on compositions reminiscent of medieval tapestries and illuminated manuscripts, became synonymous with Earle's work.

After leaving Disney, Earle continued to develop this unique visual language in his personal projects. In 2015, 15 years after his death, he was posthumously inducted into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame, a testament to his enduring influence on animation and art. His legacy can be seen in films like Pocahontas and Frozen, as well as the video game The Banner Saga.
