F-35 Fighter Jet Gets Major Thermal Upgrade with P40 System

The F-35 Lightning II, one of the world's most advanced fighter jets, has received a significant upgrade in its thermal management system. Honeywell Aerospace has introduced the P40 package, which increases cooling capacity from about 32 kilowatts to 40 kilowatts, providing a 25% boost.

The upgrade is designed to support the growing demand for thermal management as the F-35 receives more advanced sensors, mission systems, and computing equipment that generate additional heat. The P40 package combines software improvements with targeted liquid-cooling enhancements within the existing Power and Thermal Management System (PTMS) architecture.

Honeywell says the upgrade can be integrated without airframe modifications and could be installed alongside the planned Engine Core Upgrade, allowing operators to add thermal capacity during scheduled maintenance. The company expects the technology to enter service between 2029 and 2030.
