FCC Chairman: Satellite-To-Cell Competition Heats Up With SpaceX and Amazon
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr says satellite-to-cell competition is heating up, led by SpaceX and Amazon.
Carr's comments follow a recent deal in which EchoStar sold its spectrum to SpaceX and AT&T after the FCC approved license transfers last May. The sale was part of an effort to increase competition in the wireless market.
Carr said he is 'bullish' on SpaceX's ability to use new airwaves to improve satellite-to-cell service, particularly with direct wireless deals.
Azulay Carr also mentioned that Amazon's acquisition of Globalstar could be a 'real unlock' for its LEO network. However, this approval still requires further review from the FCC.
In related news, AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is facing increased competition in the satellite-to-cell market with its BlueBird rollout remaining key to success.
