Fed Rate Hike Looms: Markets React to Expected Quarter-Point Increase
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time since July 2023, with futures markets putting better than 90% odds on a quarter-point hike. The move would bring the target range to 3.75% to 4%, following six cuts totaling 1.75 percentage points. This is in line with predictions from Morgan Stanley, which has gone from forecasting zero hikes this year to two, with the second expected in December.
The market's reaction to the expected rate hike was mixed, with the Nasdaq Composite up 0.7% and the S&P 500 adding 0.3%. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained flat, despite 18 of its 30 stocks being higher. International Business Machines and American Express were among the biggest drags on the Dow, falling 3.3% and 2.5%, respectively.
The Fed's updated dot plot will include projections for 2029 for the first time, which could provide valuable insights into the committee's future plans. However, history suggests that rate hikes can have mixed results for the market, with the Nasdaq declining in the month after five of the past six hiking cycles began.
