Flight 1403: Engine Trouble and Weather Complications Cause Chaos

United Airlines Flight 1403 experienced an extraordinary series of events on August 27 after departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) bound for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

The Boeing 757-200, carrying 176 passengers and seven crew members, was initially diverted to Las Vegas due to a left-hand engine issue while climbing through approximately 32,000 feet.

After safely landing in Las Vegas at around 7:00 a.m., all passengers and crew members deplaned. A replacement aircraft, another Boeing 757-200, was arranged to continue the journey toward Newark.

However, the replacement jet encountered severe weather affecting the Newark area while approaching the region, leading it to divert again, this time to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) in Ohio.

The flight ultimately landed in Cleveland late on August 27 and reached the gate around 12:30 a.m. on August 28. The unusual sequence left passengers facing a journey that extended far beyond the normal Los Angeles-Newark schedule.
