Freeplay's Flaws: Ads, Geo Restrictions, and Low-Res Content Hamper Google's Free Streaming Service

Google's Freeplay streaming service has been gaining popularity lately, but it still has its drawbacks. One of the main issues users face is the sheer number of advertisements on the platform. While ads are expected with free streaming services, Google TV's interface can be overwhelming with repetitive commercials and inappropriate content for younger viewers.

The company did conduct a survey among its users to gauge their dissatisfaction with advertising levels, but it's unclear if any changes were made based on the results. Fortunately, a third-party app called Projectivy Launcher allows users to control ads, albeit at the cost of losing easy access to Freeplay content integrated in the Google TV launcher.

Another limitation of Freeplay is its availability only within the U.S., likely due to licensing issues for some programming outside the country. Users who travel frequently may find it difficult to access Freeplay's content while abroad, although services like Tubi and Plex are available internationally. However, using a VPN to bypass geographical restrictions may not work indefinitely, as Google may block content if it detects foreign streaming.

Freeplay has recently added over 10,000 on-demand movies and TV shows, but much of its programming is only available in low resolutions, such as 720p, which may disappoint users accustomed to 1080p or 4K. While some channels do offer 4K content, it requires a YouTube TV 4K Plus subscription, rendering the service no longer free.

Lastly, using Freeplay can be more challenging with certain smart TV interfaces, such as Samsung's Tizen, which does not support direct access to Freeplay content. However, users with Google TV or Android TV-enabled devices will find it relatively easy to access Freeplay programming.
