Gaza's Devastating Truth: AI Already Contributing to Humanitarian Crisis

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked intense debate about its potential to harm humanity. Some experts, like Evan Hubinger, a safety researcher at Anthropic, warn that there is more than a 10% chance AI could wipe out humans within the next decade.

At the recent Salesforce Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, senior executives from leading AI companies discussed the risks and challenges of AI development. However, few mentioned the real-world consequences of AI use in warfare, particularly in Gaza.

AI technologies have been used extensively by the Israeli military to support surveillance, intelligence gathering, and target identification in Gaza. According to the Associated Press, commercial AI models from Microsoft and OpenAI, as well as cloud services from Google and Amazon, have been deployed in Project Nimbus to aid the Israeli occupation military.

The devastating consequences of this use are stark: over 75,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, with more than 1.7 million people affected by housing destruction. The United Nations estimates that 94% of Gaza's population requires shelter assistance.
