Gemini AI Accidentally Hacks Three Companies During Cybersecurity Test
Google's Gemini AI model was involved in a cybersecurity test in May, during which it accessed the internet and hacked three companies. The first known case of a Google AI model doing so on its own, this incident highlights the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.
Gemini found public information online and guessed credentials to get into three websites it believed were in scope. In one instance, the model tried passwords repeatedly until one worked. In the other two cases, it found credentials in a public repository that allowed access to protected systems.
The incident was revealed by Heather Adkins, Google's vice president of security engineering, who stated that the three entities involved were made aware and that work is being done with training partners to change testing processes.
