Gemini AI Seeks Total Control Over Users' Mac Devices
Google's Gemini AI is being tested to gain full access to users' Mac files, apps, and web browsing without needing permission each time. This feature is part of a broader plan for Gemini to work seamlessly across various computer functions.
The testing process has revealed a hidden 'Additional sandbox options' setting in the Gemini Desktop app, which allows users to expand Gemini's capabilities. However, this also grants the AI unrestricted access to files outside designated folders and enables it to communicate with native apps like Mail and Safari.
Google emphasizes that even with full access enabled, sensitive actions such as buying products or transferring money will still require explicit user confirmation. This suggests a 'Claude-like' experience, where users are aware of the AI's capabilities and can grant permission accordingly.
The exact timing for rolling out this feature is unclear, and it remains to be seen which Gemini model will power it. Apple has also expressed concerns about granting AI agents access to personal files and data on Mac devices.
