GM Finds 'Sweet Spot' for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Integration

General Motors (GM) has finally found a compromise for implementing Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its vehicles. The company will introduce a new software update in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which will support both platforms in a 'windowed mode'. This means that users can access their phones' apps while still controlling the native infotainment system.

GM's decision to axe Android Auto and Apple CarPlay from many of its newer vehicles has been met with negative feedback from consumers. The company had announced in 2023 that it would remove phone projection systems from its vehicles, embracing Android Automotive and native functionality instead.

The new software update will also include a 'garage door opener' feature, which will be accessible through the infotainment system. GM group product manager for Google built-in, projection, and profiles Colin McCormick explained that this is the 'sweet spot', where users don't have to choose between using the native system or phone projection.
