Goldman Sachs Ditches One-Hike Forecast for Two Rate Hikes by Year-End
Goldman Sachs has revised its stance on the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike schedule. Initially, the bank predicted that Wednesday's rate hike would be the only increase this year, but it now expects a second 25 basis point rate hike in October.
This shift marks a notable change in Wall Street's post-meeting positioning, as Goldman's timeline is ahead of both JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, which have been predicting a follow-up move in December. The bank's economists stated that Wednesday's meeting was more hawkish than anticipated in three distinct respects.
Chairman Kevin Warsh voted with the unanimous Federal Open Market Committee to raise interest rates by a quarter-point despite President Donald Trump's urgings to cut or not hike rates.
