Google's Gemini Chatbot Leaves Schools Scrambling for Age-Appropriate Use Policies

Google's Gemini chatbot has been made available to all students, leaving schools scrambling to create policies for age-appropriate use. According to Education Week, districts are now faced with deciding which mode of Gemini to run and who will supervise first-time use.

The decision falls on district technology directors and classroom teachers this fall. Two deployment paths exist for Gemini: the free app carries added data protection for users 13 and older, while the Google Workspace version gives users over 18 access to Gemini Advanced.

EdTech Magazine described two modes a student can land in when using Gemini: the default chat or Guided Learning, which breaks down problems into steps and leads students through questions to teach them how and why. The tool adapts its approach to each student's learning style.

Google's pitch to schools has also focused on easing teacher burnout, with 44% of K-12 workers reporting feeling burned out at work always or very often, according to a Gallup poll cited by EdTech Magazine. Teachers can use Gemini to draft lesson plans and adapt them to different grade levels or state standards.
