Goldman Sachs: Indian Banks' Asset Quality Trends Remain Stable Amid MSME Concerns
According to a report by Goldman Sachs, Indian banks are likely to maintain benign asset quality trends in the coming years. The report notes that deleveraging in unsecured lending has limited incremental stress on the banking sector.
The West Asia crisis is expected to have minimal impact on asset quality, with overall stress remaining contained. Over the past five years, the outlook for Indian banks' asset quality has improved significantly.
However, the report flags concerns over potential asset quality stress in the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) segment, which has grown at a CAGR of around 20-25% over the past three to five years. While banks have not moved down the risk curve, a significant portion of MSME lending is backed by adequate collateral.
The report also notes that while MSME loans have grown faster than other segments, the sector can witness pressure if the impact of the West Asia crisis or El Nino proves more severe than expected.
