Google-Backed Mammoth Solar Project Combines Solar with Zinc-Based Long-Duration Storage
A new solar-and-storage project in West Virginia is taking shape, backed by Google, MN8 Energy, and Eos Energy Enterprises. The $350 million development will combine utility-scale solar with lithium-ion and zinc-based long-duration storage systems.
The project, known as Mammoth Solar, will be located on a reclaimed coal mine site in Kanawha County. It will include 86 MW of utility-scale solar, 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion storage, and 10 MW/100 MWh of Eos' Z3 zinc-based long-duration ESS.
The zinc system is designed to store energy for 10 hours, extending the availability of solar power beyond the shorter-duration lithium-ion system. The project partners say it will fill a critical grid need by delivering clean capacity matched to data center load profiles.
