Google Bets Big on Nuclear Power for AI Data Centers
Google has announced an agreement to upgrade two existing nuclear power plants in Georgia as part of its efforts to meet the growing energy needs of its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
The upgrades, known as 'uprates,' will allow the Vogtle and Hatch nuclear plants to operate at higher temperatures, producing more heat and electricity. The project is estimated to add 96 megawatts of new capacity to the grid, which could power tens of thousands of homes.
Google's deal with Georgia Power comes amid growing concerns about the strain AI data centers are placing on local power grids and water systems. Many communities have opposed the construction of these facilities due to fears about increased utility bills and pollution.
Nuclear power has become an attractive option for companies like Google, which requires massive amounts of electricity to power its data centers. Despite being more expensive than natural gas or wind power, nuclear energy is becoming competitive again due to increasing demand and the prohibitively high costs of building new reactors.
