Google Bolsters Android Security for Digital IDs
Google is expanding its Android Digital Credential Alliance to make digital IDs on Android phones more trustworthy. The program, previously known as the Android Ready SE program, was launched in 2021 and brought chip makers together to build a secure hardware foundation for digital credentials.
The alliance now includes government agencies, phone makers, and wallet developers to ensure that digital IDs work everywhere and meet strict security standards.
Google's setup relies on a chain of trust, starting at the hardware level with Strongbox running inside a dedicated secure chip. This physically isolates your credentials from the rest of your phone, making it difficult for unauthorized access.
The same security system powers Google Wallet and is serving as a reference model for the European Digital Identity Wallet. The expansion is expected to bring bank-grade security to more phones, particularly those that support digital IDs in the US and other countries.
