Google Canvas Used to Create Custom Digital Monster Manual for Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) players know the frustration of constantly referencing the Monster Manual during gameplay. The book, while comprehensive, was not designed for speed or live sessions. To alleviate this issue, Ali created a digital version of the Monster Manual using Google Canvas.

Ali had been running D&D sessions with the 2024 fifth edition rules and found himself frequently flipping through the physical book or scrolling through PDFs to find specific monster abilities or lore. He realized that building a tool to address this problem would be beneficial, both for himself and other players.

The digital Monster Manual was created using Canvas's feature set, allowing Ali to build a customized tool tailored to his specific needs. The original version of the tool was refined multiple times before Ali settled on a final design. One key aspect of the tool is its search bar, which allows players to quickly find specific monsters or abilities.

In testing the tool, Ali found that it worked smoothly, but did encounter one issue: a minimum character threshold in the search bar. This was addressed with a follow-up prompt, and the tool has since been put into use during D&D sessions. The digital Monster Manual has improved gameplay for Ali's group, making it easier to access information quickly and efficiently.
