Google Cloud has reported that a power event at its UK data center caused a widespread outage on Tuesday, affecting major banks, businesses, and government services. The disruption impacted services in the europe-west2 region, with banks like Revolut, Lloyds Bank, and HSBC confirming issues for their customers. Revolut alone saw over 1,500 reports of service problems shortly after 08:00 BST, though the company assured users that their money and data remained secure.
Other affected platforms included Royal Mail, DPD, and Forest, an e-bike service. The HM Courts and Tribunals Service also acknowledged problems with its video platform for remote hearings. While banks did not directly link the outages to Google Cloud, the tech giant apologized for the disruption and stated that services were recovering.
By Tuesday afternoon, Google Cloud reported that most issues had been resolved, though a small number of customers were still affected. The company promised a detailed analysis once its internal investigation concluded. Experts noted that the outage highlights the reliance of businesses on a few major cloud providers, emphasizing the importance of quick recovery and alternative solutions.
