Google Confirms ChromeOS Phase Out, Transition to Googlebook OS

Google has confirmed that it will be phasing out ChromeOS updates in mid-2034, affecting devices that are not yet halfway through their 10-year support lifecycle. The company explained that many newer Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, but specific models have not been listed.

The announcement is based on plans previously described in court records, which were confirmed by a support document for Chrome IT administrators. The document states that Google will continue to support the manageability of web apps for IT admins and provide a robust set of APIs for web developers, despite the shift from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS.

Googlebooks will have a 10-year update and security patch cycle, similar to Chromebooks, but starting from the launch date of the CPU inside the system. Management capabilities for Googlebooks are expected in the second half of 2027, while new licenses for Chrome Education and Enterprise upgrade licenses will be required for devices transitioning to Googlebook OS.
