Google Cracks Down on Fake Author Profiles in Content
Google has recently updated its guidelines to explicitly warn against using deceptive authorship information in online content. The search giant emphasized that fabricating creator profiles, such as using AI-generated headshots, fictitious names, or false credentials, is a form of deception. According to Google, any such deception undermines the trustworthiness of a page for both users and automated quality systems, marking it as low-quality.
This new directive is part of broader updates to Google's helpful content search documentation, which now includes sections on defining main content and EOT/SA criteria. The company previously indicated that faking author information was not a significant concern, but this stance appears to have shifted.
Google's updated guidelines now include specific instructions to avoid deceptive authorship practices. These include not using AI-generated headshots, making up author names, or falsifying credentials. The company warns that engaging in these practices signals a low-quality page and can harm its ranking in search results.
