Google DeepMind Researcher Resigns Over AI Safety Concerns
Bilal Chughtai, a former researcher at Google DeepMind, has spoken out about his concerns over the development of artificial intelligence (AI). He believes that AI has the potential to 'kill us all' if not developed responsibly.
Chughtai worked on AGI safety and alignment research at Google DeepMind for a year and a half before resigning. He witnessed firsthand the rapid development of AI technology and is now speaking out about his concerns.
'Our present understanding of how to train AI systems that deeply want what we want is extremely rudimentary,' Chughtai wrote in a statement. 'Worse, we are not on track to solve alignment in time: frontier AI capabilities are improving much faster than our understanding of AI alignment.'
Chughtai's comments come after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned about the dangers of unaligned AI. While some have criticized Coxon's views, others at Anthropic and OpenAI have echoed his concerns.
