Google DeepMind Unveils SynthID Bio to Bolster Synthetic Biology Security
Google's DeepMind has introduced SynthID Bio, a family of watermarking methods designed to strengthen biosecurity and scientific integrity in synthetic biology.
The technology embeds an imperceptible signature directly into biological code, ensuring the watermark is verifiable on both digital models and physical proteins. This approach preserves biological function while maintaining near-perfect detectability.
SynthID Bio was developed to address challenges arising from generative AI in synthetic biology, such as novel designs bypassing traditional DNA synthesis screening and mislabeled synthetic structures polluting public databases.
Watermarked protein binders designed using SynthID Bio showed no compromise in biological function, matching hit rates and binding affinities of unwatermarked versions. The technology also preserves AlphaFold 3 prediction accuracy while offering near-perfect detectability.
