Google Downgrades Free Gemini Users to Smaller Model
Google is making significant changes to its Gemini AI chatbot, affecting both free and paid users. Starting on October 9, all free users will be downgraded to the Flash-Lite model, which is the cheapest and fastest member of the Gemini family. This means that while questions will still get answers, they will come from a model designed for quick rewrites and short summaries rather than complex problems or long documents.
The change also affects paid plans, with Google AI Plus losing access to the Pro model. AI Pro subscribers will retain their access to Pro but gain Deep Think, a mode that explores multiple lines of reasoning in parallel before answering. The announcement has left some gaps, including a lack of comparison between the different models and uncertainty about where Gemini 4 Argon will sit in the ladder.
The effort controls will also be arriving in October, allowing users to adjust their model's performance level from low to high. However, this will come at a cost, with higher effort consuming more of the user's limit. Google has not announced any regional exceptions and has left unclear whether Workspace or education accounts follow the same rules.
