Google Dumbs Down European Search Results to Avoid Massive Fines

Google's recent changes to its search results in Europe have sparked controversy over user experience and antitrust compliance. The company has rolled out updates that degrade the quality of search results, prioritizing third-party price comparison sites and booking portals over direct links to businesses and service providers.

The move is intended to avoid massive fines under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which previously slapped Google with a pair of fines totaling €890 million ($1.02 billion). To comply, Google has dismantled its integrated 'rich' search modules that displayed instant information directly on the results page.

These changes have resulted in stripped-down search results, with features like real-time pricing and direct booking tools no longer available. According to internal testing by Google, affected users are feeling friction from the changes, requiring them to re-type search queries and navigate extra links to get directly to a merchant.

Nick Fox, Senior VP of Knowledge & Information at Google, stated that the compliance changes 'degrade the user experience for Europeans' and boost online intermediaries at the expense of local businesses. The company claims these changes will result in local operators facing higher commission fees and reduced visibility, with earlier DMA-mandated interface tweaks already causing a 30% drop in free, direct-booking web traffic to European hotels and businesses.
